A writer and so much more

What exactly do I do as a freelancer and independent contractor?

What can I do for you and your organization? Glad you asked.

Need a writer?

I'm a five-time winner of the Alabama Sports Writer of the Year Award from the National Sports Media Association and have earned more than a hundred state, regional and national writing awards presented by organizations such as the Associated Press Sports Editors and the United States Basketball Writers Association. In 2022, on the 50th anniversary of the Alabama Sports Writers Association, I was named one of the 50 legends of the ASWA. In 2023, the USBWA inducted me into its Hall of Fame as the first person so honored from Alabama.

Need a media consultant?

I've worked full time for the largest newspaper in Alabama (The Birmingham News) and the largest website in the state (AL.com) and part time for three of the largest TV stations in the state (CBS-42, Fox-6 and ABC 33/40 in Birmingham). Currently, I write weekly Monday and Thursday columns for The Lede, an Alabama Media Group publication.

Need a writing coach or tutor?

I've taught journalism classes at both the University of Florida in Gainesville, where I was named graduate student teacher of the year by the College of Journalism and Communications, and Samford University in Birmingham, where I created a sports writing class as an adjunct professor.

Need a digital strategist?

I have designed websites for the CoachSafely Foundation and myself.  My personal Twitter account can generate up to 3 million impressions a month. I have managed a social media team as Vice President of Marketing for the Bruno Event Team in Birmingham and have handled all social media as a consultant for the National Council of Youth Sports and the CoachSafely Foundation.

Need a video producer?

I have written, directed and/or produced marketing videos for the CoachSafely Foundation, the Alabama Recreation & Parks Association (ARPA) and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine on behalf of the National Council of Youth Sports starring Steve Spurrier and Jesse Palmer.

Need a professional speaker?

I've been a regular guest speaker at quarterback clubs and civic organizations throughout SEC country. I've got stories for days on tracking down Bo Jackson's X-rays, uncovering Alabama's search for Nick Saban, helping to bring the UAB football program back from the dead and so much more.

Need a radio or television personality?

I've been host or co-host of daily radio and TV shows in Birmingham and Mobile, AL, one of which was nominated for a Southeast Regional Emmy Award. I've been a guest on local, regional and national radio and TV shows from ESPN's "Outside the Lines" to the SEC Network's "Paul Finebaum Show." I host the Alabama Public Television broadcasts of the AHSAA Super 7 State Football Championships and the State Basketball Finals. I co-host "College Football Saturday" on CBS-42 in Birmingham. I do weekly radio guest hits on Tide 100.9 in Tuscaloosa on "Inside the Locker Room" with Wimp and Barry Sanderson and on ESPN 107.5 The Ticket in Montgomery and ESPN 106.7 in Auburn on "The MAX Roundtable" with Doug Amos.
